Bugisu Elderly People Task Gov’t To Support Bamboo Planting

In a bid to mitigate landslides in the eastern region, "Likono lye Bamasaba," a non-government organization, a group formed by the elderly people has tasked the government and other stakeholders to support the growing of Bamboo in the Bugisu region. The group also celebrated Uganda's first-ever World Bamboo Day recently with the primary aim of raising awareness about the countless benefits derived from bamboo. The ceremony took place at Mbale Senior Secondary School.

The Chairman of Likono lye Bamasaba, David Nashyanga, explained the reason for the Bamboo Day celebrations and how they conceived the vision of promoting bamboo as a source of income for the people of Masaba land. He said the government should put more effort and support the community in the mountainous areas to grow bamboo which holds the soils intact and stops mass movement.

Elizabeth Khakai, the Secretary of Likono lye Bamasaba organization said the elderly people decided to come together to create awareness among Ugandans about the countless benefits of bamboo.

Buyera Moses, the Head Teacher of Mbale Senior Secondary School, praised the beauty of having World Bamboo Day in Uganda and encouraged Likono members to continue visiting the school to educate the younger generation about the advantages of bamboo.

Rhoda Nyaribi, the Mbale City Environment Officer, emphasized the reasons and importance of World Bamboo to the people of Bugisu.

The Member of Parliament for Bungokho Central, Richard Wanda, in a speech, highlighted some of the numerous benefits of bamboo species and called on the people of Masaba land to embrace bamboo and coffee as a means to lift themselves out of poverty.

He urged those who cultivate along riverbanks to plant bamboo, which can help mitigate the calamities that affect the people of Masaba land.
