UPC Lauds Example Of Archbishop Janani Luwum

On the eve of the commemoration of the annual Archbishop Janani Luwum Day, the Uganda People’s Congress party has highlighted the ideals the late Archbishop stood for and called for the emulation of the same.

The UPC party Spokesperson, Arach Oyat Sharon, who addressed journalists at the party’s head office on Uganda House, said that Janani Luwum laid down his life for the observance of human rights and respect for the rule of law.

As Ritah Nandera reports, UPC also called for a long-lasting and sustainable solution to address the rampant fire outbreaks.

The small church at Wigweng in Mucwini sub-county, Kitgum District will be a bee-hive of activity tomorrow Thursday 16th September for the national commemoration and prayer in honour of Janani Jakaliya Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga Zaire who was martyred in 1977.

The Uganda People Congress (UPC) party has underscored the need for Ugandans not only to celebrate the life of Archbishop Luwum but also emulate his works, for instance fighting for the protection and observance of human rights.

Meanwhile, UPC has sympathized with the traders of Kiganda zone in Kisenyi Parish, Kampala who lost goods worth millions of shillings when a fire gutted their trading area at dawn on Monday 13th February 2023. UPC asked the Government to give relief to the traders and others who lost property since many are servicing loans.

The UPC party spokesperson also appealed to the Government to work with other stakeholders for a sustainable solution to the persistent huge fire outbreaks, especially in markets and schools.

According to the Police Annual Crime Report of 2021, a total of 1,258 fire emergencies were handled in 2021 compared to 1,015 in 2020, marking a 23.9% increase. These fire incidents were mainly attributed to negligence, electrical short circuits, charcoal stoves left to burn overnight, unattended to candles, among others.
