Ugandans Express Mixed Reactions To New Parliamentary Leadership:Citizens Call For Transparency, Accountability And Service Delivery.Public Looks To 12th Parliament For Reforms And Restored T

A new chapter has begun in Uganda’s parliamentary leadership following the election of Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

While some Ugandans have welcomed the new leadership with optimism and expectations of better governance, others remain skeptical, questioning whether the new Parliament will effectively tackle corruption and address the pressing concerns of ordinary citizens.

Our reporter now brings you voices from downtown Kampala on what Ugandans expect from the 12th Parliament.

Over the years, Uganda’s Parliament has remained at the center of major national debates ranging from corruption scandals and accountability concerns to service delivery and representation of citizens’ interests.

With the inauguration of the 12th Parliament under new leadership, many Ugandans are now looking toward possible reforms that could rebuild public trust and strengthen democratic governance.

Following the election of Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth as speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as deputy speaker, residents in downtown Kampala expressed mixed reactions, with some hopeful that the new administration will usher in positive change while others fear corruption and political influence may continue to undermine Parliament’s credibility.

Joseph, a wholesaler in Kiyembe dealing in curtains, said he believes the new Speaker’s experience in public service could help improve leadership within Parliament.

He noted that Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth’s previous role in government demonstrates his understanding of national issues and governance.

Joseph also defended the re-election of Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker, saying leaders should be judged based on their performance and ability to serve rather than public perception alone.

However, not all citizens expressed confidence in the new leadership.

Kasolo Sundi, a boda boda rider, argued that corruption among public officials may continue unless institutions responsible for monitoring government programs and public expenditure are strengthened and allowed to operate independently.

Other residents, including Nalule Janat and Ssekamanya Johnbosco, called upon the 12th Parliament to prioritize transparency, fairness, and effective service delivery for all Ugandans regardless of political affiliation.

Ssekamanya also said the continued leadership of Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has raised questions among sections of the public following recent political developments within Parliament, urging authorities to ensure fairness, accountability, and openness in leadership processes.

As the 12th Parliament officially begins its work, citizens say the new leadership now carries the responsibility of restoring public confidence and ensuring that Parliament truly serves the interests of ordinary Ugandans.
