UNHCR Joins Campaign To Save River Rwizi

UNHCR has joined the campaign against plastic disposal in a bid to save River Rwizi.

The staff of UNHCR Mbarara yesterday spent the day collecting plastics disposed of around River Rwizi in villages around Mbarara City.

The river which is the main source of water for city residents has seen increased encroachments of late with people also turning it into a dumping site.

According to Shelubale Paul Ali-Pauni, the head of UNHCR sub-region office Mbarara, the initiative was part of their activities to mark International Refugee Day which was celebrated on 20th June 22, 2023.

He said their intervention intended to support Mbarara city in promoting a clean city environment which can only be achieved through environmental protection.

The team also planted trees around the River Rwizi banks. The river has seen its banks washed away with residents continuing to encroach on it. This move is intended to rally people around Mbarara to support tree planting as one of the ways to protect the environment.

The move has been hailed by, David Sancho Nuwagaba- an environment officer in Mbarara City. Nuwagaba says scu initiatives are critical in saving and conserving the environment.

Mbarara city authorities have since embarked on plastic recycling. They have put up bankers where all –plastic collected in the city and the region is recycled.
River Rwizi is the major source of water for residents of Mbarara and other districts in Southwestern.
