Outrage In Rubanda As UNRA Fails To Repair Collapsed Kabale-Kisoro Road

Residents and leaders in Rubanda District are expressing frustration with Uganda National Roads Authority for not repairing the collapsed Kabale-Kisoro road, which gave way three months ago. The road's collapse has disrupted transportation, inconvenienced the local community, and impacted economic activities.

UNRA was expected to work on the damages as soon as possible but residents have since lost hope since the road is still in shambles. UNRA officials say investigations are still ongoing. The traffic police were allowing small vehicles to pass which could be a risk to the road users because the spoilage seems to be increasing and residents have resorted to calling upon the government to intervene.

On May 4th, 2023, a crack appeared at Bwara village, Hamurwa town council, Rubanda district, and rapidly turned into a collapse due to heavy mudslides. Transport between Kabale and Kisoro was halted for about three hours until traffic police allowed smaller vehicles to cross.

Despite pleas for urgent repairs, UNRA's inaction has left residents feeling neglected and unheard, raising safety concerns and fears of further damage to the area. Road users express frustration with UNRA's handling of the situation, as initial promises of repair within three weeks were not fulfilled, with equipment and workers disappearing within a week.

The remaining part of the road, still open for use, poses a significant safety risk for road users, including pedestrians, school children, and livestock. As daily commutes continue to be difficult, residents urge UNRA to fulfill its promises and quickly resume repairs to ensure safety and accessibility.

Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba, the Rubanda district Chairperson, criticizes UNRA for its inability to complete repairs within the promised timeframe, highlighting the road's crucial role in promoting economic growth and connectivity not only within Rubanda District but also in neighboring regions and counties.

Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA spokesperson, clarifies that the road has not been abandoned, stating that they are in the process of acquiring a contractor for deeper investigations, road testing, and design. He assures that a contractor will be on-site by the end of the month and urges the public to drive safely on the congested road to prevent accidents.
