Masindi Joins National Cleaning Day Exercise: Businesses Closed as Residents Participate in Monthly Clean-Up. Police Enforce Restrictions During National Cleaning Day
Masindi District has joined the rest of the country in observing Uganda National Cleaning Day, with businesses closing and residents participating in a nationwide clean-up exercise aimed at promoting sanitation and environmental hygiene.
The monthly initiative, held under the theme "A Clean Uganda is Everybody's Responsibility," takes place every last Saturday of the month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Businesses remained closed across Masindi District as residents took part in Uganda's National Cleaning Day, a nationwide exercise intended to improve sanitation and promote a cleaner environment.
To facilitate the exercise, movement of all non-exempt vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians was restricted, with the Uganda Police Force enforcing compliance. Several vehicles and motorcycles were impounded for violating the directive.
Communities participated in cleaning public places, including markets, schools, health facilities, places of worship, roads and drainage channels, in an effort to improve public hygiene and reduce the spread of disease.
Security officials say the restrictions were necessary to allow communities to fully participate in the exercise while maintaining order throughout the district.
Political leaders have welcomed the public's response, urging residents to maintain cleanliness beyond the monthly exercise and make environmental sanitation a daily responsibility.
The National Cleaning Day initiative is coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister, in partnership with local governments and the Ministry of Health, with enforcement by the Uganda Police Force.
As Uganda continues to institutionalise the monthly clean-up campaign, leaders say sustained public participation will be key to building healthier communities and creating a cleaner, safer environment for all.
