Ministers Reject Teso College Renovations
Drama ensued at Teso College Aloet in Soroti District when two State Ministers, Musa Ecweru and Peter Ogwang, blocked the ceremony to hand over dilapidated buildings at Teso College Aloet, to the contractor for the renovation.
According to the ministers, some of the dilapidated buildings needed to be condemned and demolished instead of renovated. The Ministry of Education and Sports had disbursed 4.9 billion for the renovations.
All began well at Teso College Aloet in Soroti District during the ceremony to hand over buildings to the contractor for the renovation.
State Minister for Works, Musa Ecweru, and State Minister for Works Peter Ogwang listened to speeches from the school head teacher, Chairperson Board of Governors, and the Assistant Town Clerk.
They later moved to inspect the dilapidated school buildings. Some had leaking asbestos roofs, non-functional water taps sinks cracked walls and broken verandahs.
the Government contracted Gabikan Engineering Ltd to do the renovations.
State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang consulted with the ministry technocrats and he agreed with fellow Minister Musa Ecweru to stop the handover and groundbreaking of the site.
the Hon. Ecweru said that they halted the renovations because the scope of work does not match the funds.
Ecweru who is an old boy of the college noted that some buildings were destroyed by the rebels during the war in Teso while some structures were too old and condemned.
The head teacher of TCA, Julius Opasso, said that the renovation offer was an indicator that the government is committed to improving the education sector. He noted that the renovation will cover the laboratory blocks, dormitories, washrooms, dining hall, and kitchen among others.
Teso College Aloet is one of the traditional government-aided boy's schools in Teso, Eastern Uganda with an enrolment of 1,820 students. It was established in 1954 by the then Teso District Local Government.
