Inadequate And Insecure Transport Affecting Education At Island Schools Of Lake Bunyonyi
The poor transport accessibility and insecure means have consistently had a negative impact on education development and posed life-threatening challenges for schools situated near Lake Bunyonyi. This situation is particularly critical for Island schools such as Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School and Bwama Primary School in Kitumba Sub County, Kabale District.
The lake is speckled with 29 islands of diverse sizes. The largest among them, Bwama Island, is home to Bwama Primary School, which presently accommodates about 410 pupils. These pupils must commute to the mainland daily, as the school lacks boarding facilities. Additionally, Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School, with a total enrollment of 270 students, accommodates about half of them in its boarding section.
Last week on Friday, a tragic incident unfolded where Martin Izabayo, a senior two student from Kisoro District attending Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School, met with a fatal drowning accident. This unfortunate event has enveloped the community in a somber atmosphere as the body remains unseen up-to-date. It emerged that Izabayo had ventured beyond the school premises against the directives of the school administrators, ultimately leading to this heartbreaking incident.
Back in October 2021, the Uganda Revenue Authority donated a motorboat designated for the purpose of transporting pupils of Bwama Primary School to and from their classes. This motorboat has played a crucial role in facilitating the pupils' transportation. However, there's a persistent concern voiced by both the school and parents regarding the inadequate fuel supply to sustain this transportation service. As a result, some students are still compelled to resort to using traditional local canoes as an alternative means of reaching the school.
Patience Tweheho, the Head Teacher of Bwama Primary School, and Isaac Kamukama, the Deputy Head Teacher of Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School, have both reported a concerning pattern of dropouts and disrupted studying. These challenges have emerged as a direct result of the difficulties learners face in accessing reliable transportation to and from their respective schools appealing to the government to intervene.
When questioned about the obstacles that learners encounter in reaching their schools, Moses Bwengye, the Kabale District Education Officer, explained that both the government and Kabale District are constrained by a lack of funds to address key issues. This includes the inability to provide fuel for the learners' boats and acquire essential safety equipment like life jackets. Bwengye also revealed that the situation has led to an unfortunate trend of approximately 5 learners missing school daily due to the challenges posed by the lake.
In a commendable display of corporate social responsibility, Kyambogo University has made a substantial contribution to these schools in order to enhance the quality of education and safety of learners at the lake. A delegation from Kyambogo University, spearheaded by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, presented items valued at millions to the schools. The donation included 100 life jackets, 1000 Picfare exercise books, 1000 mathematical sets, 700 pens, and 300 pencils, all of which are intended to benefit the students.
Prof Katunguka emphasized that the decision to donate life jackets was motivated by the university's commitment to ensuring the safety of the learners while they are on the lake. This gesture highlights the university's dedication to the well-being and educational advancement of the students.
Lake Bunyonyi is not only a visually appealing destination but also a place of cultural significance and natural diversity. Its tranquil waters, lush surroundings, and opportunities for both relaxation and exploration make it a unique destination in the heart of East Africa.
