Fishermen Advised To Use Global Positioning System For Boundary Identification On Lake Edward

Authorities in the fisheries department have tasked Congolese Fishermen to consider adapting to the use of a global positioning system if the issue of the boundary identification on L. Edward between Uganda and Congo is to be resolved.

This follows the persistent influx of Congolese fishermen in Ugandan waters. This was raised during the leader's meeting of Congolese and Ugandans at the Rwenshama landing site in the Rukungiri district.

Following persistent encroachment of Congolese fishermen on Ugandan waters on Lake Edward, authorities in the fisheries department are asking the Congolese to adapt to the use of the Global Positioning System for boundary identification.

According to Capt. Julius Ankunda the Fisheries Protection Unit head of operations on Lakes George, Edward, and Kazinga channel, the Congolese government has failed to establish bodies capable of protecting their part of the lake.

The Member of Parliament Nort Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo Steven Ndambire says the Congolese government has bodies meant to regulate fishing but they have been overpowered by the unruly fishermen.

Ndambire notes with concern the issue of using the Global Positioning System to determine the boundaries and will help the fishermen, especially the Congolese to know their boundaries.

Annet Kyomuhendo the chairperson for the Rwenshama landing site says if the Congolese are not stopped to encroach on Ugandan waters in, a few days Uganda lakes won't be having fish due to their illegalities and poor fishing methods they use.

Forty-five engine boats that were impounded due to illegal fishing in one month were also handed over to the authorities of DRC.
