Continuous Rains Worry Residents And Authorities In Bundibugyo District
Residents of Bundibugyo are worried due to the continuous rain which has caused destruction to property and some people have also lost their lives in the floods.
Some residents say that due to the heavy rains, some of their buildings have developed cracks and become weak.
The residents have appealed to the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness to temporarily relocate them to safer places outside the district.
Residents of Bundibugyo district have been experiencing several disasters, ranging from floods and mudslides for several years. Here in Hamutoma village in Bundibugyo town council, residents are now terrified after a mudslide hit their area.
These say all their food crops in plantations were washed away by floods and they are afraid they will soon lack what to eat.
Paul Friday, the headteacher of Hamutoma Primary School told the COU Family TV reporter that the gravity water scheme of the school was destroyed by the mudslide.
He also noted that are in fear that any time their school structure will collapse after the buildings develop cracks or be washed away by floods.
The Bundibugyo District Forestry Officer, Faita Lawrence says have started experiencing another disaster due to too much rain. He noted that more than ten thousand households have been affected in the entire district. A lot of property, land, plantations, and lives were lost due to a mudslide that hit the district for several years.
Francis Ssenyondo the district disaster focal person said that the district leadership has tried to relocate some residents but others have refused to vacate their areas.
Bundibugyo and Kasese districts in Rwenzori Region lie below the Rwenzori Mountains and routinely suffer disaster due to floods from the runoff water off the mountain.
