Two Foreigners Arrested Over Illegal Possession Of Ugandan Passports
The Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has arrested two foreigners and a Ugandan for fraudulently accessing a Ugandan passport and National Identify Card.
The two foreigners, one from Nigeria and another from Burundi were allegedly aided by Ugandans to get the passport and National ID. The con artists reportedly charged them between five-to-ten million shillings as processing fees.
The suspected document fraudsters were paraded before the media by Simon Peter Mundeyi, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The suspects are Saunders David Joshua alias Damba Joshua, Kaliisa Sam, a Ugandan, Sseruwaji Gidson, who was the broker of the deal, and one Ishime Gadiel who is still at large.
They were arrested with several exhibits including a Ugandan National ID and a Nigerian passport. They allegedly committed the crime with the help of Ugandans who charged up to ten million shillings as document processing fees.
The staff of ministry staff, who reportedly took bribes to abet the crime, are also being investigated.
Mundeyi added that the internal affairs ministry has intensified operations to crack down on illegal migrants as well. The majority have expired visas, others have no working permits and others entered the country illegally.
Some staff of the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control is believed to have issued national documents to illegal immigrants. Mundeyi says those will be arrested and taken to court.
Meanwhile, the Passport office is stuck with thousands of passports in all Kampala offices and at upcountry stations. Mundeyi appealed to the owners to pick them to create space for other applicants.
