Opposition Female Legislators Question Police Stoppage Of Meetings
Female Members of Parliament from the opposition have petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, questioning the actions of the Uganda Police in repeatedly blocking them from holding public meetings and gatherings.
The legislators appealed to the Rt. Hon. Among to join them in a march to protest against the violation of women’s rights. The Speaker pledged to engage the police on the matter.
These women donned black attire as a form of protest to show their grievance against the police's actions against them.
They accuse the Police and Resident District Commissioners RDCs of conniving with their political rivals to block their public meetings and gatherings.
The women have now petitioned the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and appealed to her to call the police to order. They have also asked the Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda to explain to Parliament the circumstances under which an RDC can order police officers to beat up people.
The Minister for the Presidency is the overall supervisor of RDCs, who represents the President in Districts and cities.
The women have now resolved to hold a demonstration to protest the police actions. They asked all people who support their cause, including the speaker of Parliament to join the demo.
The Speaker of Parliament vowed to do all it takes to bring the vice to an end. The women have also demanded that errant police officers be brought to book beyond just parading them in the police disciplinary committee.
