Mpuuga Meets Officials From Electoral Commission
JOHN BAPTIST
The Democratic Alliance (DA) National Coordinator, Mathias Mpuuga, along with other leaders, met today with officials from the Electoral Commission to discuss electoral reforms and measures to ensure transparency in Uganda's elections.
This initiative is a crucial part of the DA's broader strategy to engage various stakeholders in discussions aimed at achieving free and fair elections.
Mpuuga’s meeting with the Electoral Commission comes as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
At 11:30 am the National Coordinator of the Democratic Alliance Mathias Mpuuga was arriving for a consultative meeting with officials from the electoral commission at their headquarters in Kampala.
This initiative is a key element of the DA's broader strategy to engage various stakeholders in discussions centered on achieving free and fair elections.
The meeting that aimed at addressing electoral reforms and other measures to ensure election transparency in Uganda was not permitted to journalists and in attendance were notable leaders including Hon. Juliet Kakande, Hon. Kakembo Michael, the Electoral Commission Chairperson Simon Byabakama Mugenyi and others.
Addressing the media shortly after the meeting, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga explained to journalists what had transpired during the meeting and appreciated the commissioners for their dedicated time towards this move.
According to Mpuuga, several issues have been presented to the electoral commission in regards to the upcoming 2026 general elections. Among these is the role of the electoral commission in demarcating constituencies and especially the national voters register which Mpuuga believes has been an issue in the number of electoral challenges before court.
The other issues raised included the electoral commission allowing prisoners and Ugandans in the diaspora to exercise their voting rights, including the security for the participating candidates.
The Electoral Commission Spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi explained how the context of the meeting was to do with the mandate of the electoral commission and indicated how they are readily open for all political parties and movements for a transparent, peaceful and free and fair electoral process.
Mucunguzi further indicated how the issues that were raised by the Democratic Alliance are similar to those the commission has been focusing on to ensure the success of the upcoming elections.
Yesterday, January 15, Mpuuga held the first meeting of this series with the leadership of the Justice Forum (JEEMA) at their offices in Mengo with the discussions focusing on areas of collaboration to promote electoral reforms and a peaceful transition of power.
Close to the 2026 general elections, political parties are intensifying the mobilization of their party members across the country and these include the National Resistance Movement, Forum for Democratic Change, NUP and several others with some leaders already declaring intentions to contest.
