MP Ssegirinya’s People Await His Return
Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, who is battling a range of charges including murder and terrorism, was released yesterday on bail after spending over one year on remand.
He is charged alongside Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana and others.
Now, Ssegirinya ‘s friends and constituents expect him back to continue with his projects, some of which had stalled and other closed due to lack of funds. However, Ssegirinya says he is still in poor health and hopes to fully recover soon.
On Monday, the High Court in Masaka, presided over by the resident judge Ronald Lawrence Tweyanze granted bail to MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana for 20 million shs each and bonded them at another 50 million not-cash. The two legislators have spent 524 days on remand.
The MPs followed the court proceedings online from Kigo prison. However, there are reports that security ooeprtatives drove them away at night from Kigo after the court ruling.
Alex Luswa Luwemba, an aide to MP Ssegirinya, said his health condition is not good and he needs treatment. Before his arrest, MP Ssegirinya had launched various initiatives to help his constituents in Kawempe. These included Kawempe North healkth centre and Seg box, a savings scheme
Alex said they hope MP Ssegirinya will soon take the projects forward.
James Mubiru, a Counselor in Rubaga Division, said they are still on alert because their people could be arrested again.
Some of the leaders in Kawempe say they have been stuck with work the MP had initiated but now they hope these will be completed.
