Minister Ecweru At Ateker Marathon
The Greater Ateker Marathon has been held in Wera Town Council in Amuria district, to fundraise for the renovation of Wera Health Centre III which was built in 1943.
The chief runner at the marathon was the State Minister for Works, Hon. Musa Francis Ecweru who is also the area MP. Ecweru urged the stakeholders to have the marathon annually to support different causes.
The Greater Ateker Marathon held on Sunday 29th January 2023 in Amuria town attracted all groups of people including central and local govt officials, people from the private sector the elderly, the youth and children.
They came to run and fundraise for the purchase of Maternity bed, Sterilizer and renovation of dilapidated Wera Health Centre III.
The State Minister for Works Hon. Musa Francis Ecweru, who is also the Amuria MP appreciated the people who turned up, including guests and sons and daughters of the soil who work in Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja.
The Minister decried the lack of maternity beds at Wera Health Centre III which is on the Soroti-Moroto Highway in Amuria district and serves thousands of residents.
Onapito Ekomoloit, the Legal and Corporate Affairs Director of Nile Breweries Limited, says the marathon was organized by the residents and people born in Wera sub-county, supported by their friends, to mobilize support for the renovation of Wera Health Centre III.
Onapito noted that the renovated main building will be named after his late father John Ekomoloit who rendered services that saved the lives of the people in Teso region.
Onapito and his family pledged 50 million shillings towards the renovation of the dilapidated building.
Richard Adongu, the chairman of the organizing committee of the Greater Wera Marathon, said the health facility had the oldest structure built in 1943.
Each of the participants in the marathon bought running kits and paid a minimum of 5,000 each to register.
Wera Health Centre III serves about 18,400 people annually in Amuria and neighbouring Soroti district. The Out Patient Department (OPD) receives 2,500 to 2,600 patients monthly.
Wera Health centre III has only one general ward which accommodates patients from Postnatal, Maternity, Paediatric ward or children, TB and casualty.
