LOP Seeks Explanation From Speaker Among Over Unclear Expenditures Surrounding Her Office
The Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi has called upon the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among to release an official statement regarding the appropriation of funds within the institution that she leads.
He also asked the Speaker to immediately recall parliament back into session for this, among several other issues to be discussed on the floor. This was during a press address at parliament.
In the past few days, there have been allegations making rounds on social media surrounding the office of the speaker, ranging from things to do with the allocation of billions of shillings allegedly being put on different accounts of staff members for activities by the Speaker in the field, her travel per diem, among others.
During a media briefing at the LOP office in parliament today, the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi called on the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among to come clear and explain these expenditures.
Regarding the allegations about community outreach by the Speaker’s Office, billions of shillings have been put on different staff members’ accounts for activities by the Speaker in the field.
Furthermore, per over UGX 3 Bn to fund the alleged speaker-owned Mama Bukedea radio to do parliament work, Ssenyonyi said these figures and contracts are unexplainable.
He highlighted the three actions they expect to be taken, including the resumption of parliament sittings among others, for issues regarding the spending of taxpayers’ money to be accounted for, else, they will resort to other yet-to-be-communicated measures if no response is received by end of the week.
The leader of the Opposition also mentioned that since his appointment into office, he has not yet been invited to any meetings held by the committee.
About the recent scandal between NUP and one of their member, Mathias Mpuuga, as well as the exposure of leaders alleged to be engaging in misuse of office, the LOP calling on leaders to be exemplary, making it clear that these calls to action are not out of personal wrangles but rather a bid to seek for accountability for tax payer’s money.
