Kyegeggwa farmers embrace small scale irrigation

Famers in Kyegegwa district have been urged to embrace irrigation system as a way of increasing production in their farms.

Leaders say many farmers have been making losses especially during the dry season.

While commissioning a one billion and six hundred million small scale irrigation scheme under U-GIFT Monica Karungi the resident district commissioner Kyegegwa thanked farmers who embraced this project.
Small scale irrigation scheme under U-gift program is currently implemented in 40 districts of Uganda where a farmer pays 25 percent and the government adds 75 percent according to the capacity of the machines a famer wishes to use.

Famers say nowadays they have been targeting just one season instead of two seasons for fear of drought hitting their gardens.

Annet Nakidde the Kyegegwa district agriculture engineer says that 32 farmers have already benefited from the program and the government has already allocated more funds to Kyegegwa to connect as many farmers as possible.

Previously Kyegegwa district had two seasons with a lot of rains but of late, the rains are unpredictable.

Farmers were also advised to use this irrigation system to change from subsistence farming to commercial farming which will help them to raise income.
