Government Pledges To Support Science Innovations In Agriculture
The Minister of State for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama has pledged the government’s commitment to supporting innovations in the agriculture sector, to develop agro-industrialization.
He made the remarks while closing a three-day conference in Kampala organized by the National Agricultural Research Organization and Makerere University under the theme; “Innovation for Enhancing Productivity and Agro-industrialisation.”
The conference was convened to share knowledge and research innovations with the public. Farmers are also engaged in practicals through programs like the incubation space at the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO).
Dr. Sadik Kassim, the Deputy Director General in charge of agriculture promotion at the National Agricultural Research Organisation, explained that agro-industrialization should focus on making innovations spring out of the available resources, adding that Uganda is on track to boost value addition on products like coffee and cassava.
Dr. Kassim noted that the Oil Palm Industry is developing in various areas in Uganda including Mayuge, Zombo, and Nwoya districts. This is in addition to the traditional Kalangala Islands where oil palm is being grown on large tracts of land. The perennial crop is doing well in the new areas and is expected to contribute to Uganda’s economy.
The Makerere University, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, noted with concern that there is still a gap in research and therefore there is a need to expand the budget for research innovations.
The Minister of State for Animal Industry, Bright Rwamirama urged all scientists with innovations to bring them on board because the government is ready to support them.
This conference is in line with Sustainable Development Goal No two which seeks sustainable solutions to end hunger in all its forms by 2030 and to achieve food security.
