Fort Portal Residents Worried Over City Stagnation

After more than two years now since Fort Portal Tourism City was created, residents say there are no indicators of transformation from a municipality to a city.

The residents insist that there is no difference between their city now and the municipality then. This raises worry for the city’s development.
In July 2020, the minister for Local government officially launched Fort portal tourism city after a pronouncement of more seven municipalities elevated to city status. Two years after elevation, residents in Fort portal tourism city say nothing has changed to portray the new status.

Andrew Muhereza, a resident has worked in Fort portal for more than ten years; he says the services he enjoyed during the municipality status were much better than now. The same narrative is shared by boda boda rider Araari Kyaligonza.
Fort Portal Democratic Party Chairman Haruna Kibirango says the city status was more of a political stunt than what it should have been.

Nelon Touch, a tour guide based in Fort Portal says that much as the benefits of the new tourism city have not yet come, its expected. Fort Portal woman Member of Parliament Hon. Linda Irene Mugisa says all is not lost since there are some things that the government has already done.

According to government, this was in line with the Vision 2040 recommendation to create new cities to decongest Kampala. Fort Portal Tourism City boasts of a number of tourism attraction features which include Roaring Nyakasura waterfalls, the more than 50 dazzling crater lakes, Amabere Ganyinamwiru caves, Kibale National Park, Ranges of Mt. Rwenzori, Culture, Karambi royal tombs, River Mpanga.
