Fish Mongers In Kitagwenda Slam Politicians For Politicizing Fishing Operations
The fish mongers in Kitagwenda district have cautioned politicians in the district against criticizing and politicizing the Fisheries Protection Unit's (FPU) operations aimed at curbing illegal fishing on Lake George.
This was during a new initiative of sensitizing fishermen at landing sites across the country on how they can implement good fishing practices as well as sensitization about the new fisheries regulations under the act of 2023.
In a bid to curb illegal fishing on Ugandan water bodies, the fisheries protection unit held a sensitization meeting with fish mongers from landing sites of Nyaker, Kayanja, and Mahyoro in Kitagwenda district.
During this engagement, the fish mongers expressed dissatisfaction with some politicians in the district for compromising the operations of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) on the lake for their own interests.
MAJ. FRANK Kanziri, Operations Commander, responds on the concern of politicians politicizing FPU operations on lake George
They called on Fisheries protection unit (FPU) commander Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahurwa to add more enforcement of FPU soldiers and thanked His excellency the president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for appointing Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahurwa because the fish catch-up has increased
The fishermen raise a concern about the law enforcement of FPU soldiers. Maj. Frank Kanzira promised to take the concern to the high command.
Maj. Joseph Cherop, an FPU intelligence officer, threatened to arrest those who are still engaging themselves in illegal fishing.
