EC Staff Allegedly Commercialize Voter Registration Exercise

EC Staff Allegedly Commercialize Voter Registration Exercise

PRIMA

The speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among has directed members of parliament to report and arrest all the electoral commission officials in their areas taking part in the voters’ register update exercise that are allegedly asking for money from citizens.

This was after complaints were raised by some legislators who claimed that people in their constituency have reported the matter.

On Monday 10th Feb, 2025, the electoral commission extended the  voter verification exercise by an additional 7 days to the recent 21 days that were slated for update exercise which was faced with numerous challenges including lack of electricity in some areas.

During plenary today, some legislators brought complaints alleging that the electoral commission staffs deployed in their areas have commercialized the exercise by soliciting money from people, with some local government leaders also politicizing the exercise.

With emphasis, the speaker of parliament made it clear that government covered the costs that would be incurred during the exercise, stating that it is illegal and he or she should be arrested.

On addition to the grievances raised, the MPs also expressed displeasure with the way the process is proceeding despite government’s dispersement of moneys to aid the smooth run of activities.

Giving her ruling to the concerns, speaker Among directing the Prime Minister Robina Nabanjja to report back to the house on the resolution she and the electoral commission’s chairperson would have come up with after discussion concerns raised.
