Domestic and gender-based violence cases are on the rise in Amuria District as prolonged dry conditions continue to affect household livelihoods.

Police records from Amuria Central Police Station indicate that 19 domestic violence cases were reported between the beginning of July and 24th July, compared to fewer than seven cases recorded monthly between January and April.

According to the Child and Family Protection Unit, food shortages have placed many families under pressure, resulting in separation, child neglect, and increased domestic conflict.

District leaders say the prolonged dry spell has reduced household incomes, increasing stress and disagreements within families.

The assistant resident district commissioner has encouraged residents to diversify their sources of income through small businesses and livestock farming while embracing irrigation to improve food production.
