Church of Uganda, African Children's Educational Initiative Sign Partnership to Boost Literacy in Schools

The Church of Uganda has taken a significant step toward improving literacy and educational outcomes in its schools through a new partnership with the African Children’s Educational Initiative Inc. (ACEII), a non-profit organization based in the United States. Today, at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe, Kampala, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mr. James Rodger Qualls, representing ACEII.

This collaboration aims to bolster literacy education in Church-founded schools across Uganda by providing high-quality reading materials and educational resources. The partnership’s initial focus will be on schools in the districts of Luweero, Nakasongola, and Nakaseke, which make up the Luwero Diocese.

Under the MoU, ACEII will supply literacy-appropriate books, dictionaries, reference materials, and teacher resources to enhance students’ reading culture and academic success. The organization will also conduct workshops and training sessions to raise literacy awareness among educators and school administrators, ultimately fostering a sustainable reading culture.

Rev. Canon Ongeng welcomed the partnership, emphasizing the importance of community responsibility and proactive engagement. He also highlighted the Church’s ongoing efforts to empower both the girl and boy children, echoing Archbishop Kaziimba’s concern about the need to support boys’ education to prevent gender imbalance and related social issues.

Mr. Qualls reaffirmed ACEII’s commitment to community-led and values-driven education support across Africa, emphasizing that their work is aimed at creating sustainable development through holistic partnerships.

In attendance were key stakeholders, including Mr. Levi Kisakye, the Church of Uganda’s Program Officer for Drug Prevention, and Ms. Gorret Kyamazima from Walter Secondary School, one of the schools expected to benefit from the initiative.
