Bunyangabu Leaders Worried Over Theft of Skulls from NRM Fighter's Monument
By the time the liberation war ended in 1986, several soldiers and residents of Katebwa sub-county had lost their lives on the battlefront.
Katebwa Sub-County LC V Councilor, John Manume explains that the locals had buried the soldiers in the bush.
Manume says that in 2004, the ruling National Resistance Movement government suggested that the bodies of the deceased are exhumed, the bones collected, and kept in a monument hall that was later established to preserve the history of the area.
He adds that the president had pledged to establish a primary school and a standard guest house at the site, which would be used to generate income for the area and provide shelter for the tourists who would visit the monument hall.
According to Manume, only less than 60 out of the over 320 skulls collected are remaining in the monument hall.
The remaining skulls are believed to have been stolen by witch doctors. The residents appeal to the president to fulfill his promises to their region.
