Buhoma Residents in Kanungu Demonstrate Over Poor State of Tourism Road: Residents Say Road Has Become Nearly Impassable

Residents of Bwindi in Buhoma Town Council, Kanungu District, this morning staged a peaceful demonstration over the poor state of the tourism road connecting Bwindi to Kanyantorogo.

The residents said the road has become nearly impassable, leading to frequent accidents involving both tourists and local residents. They called on the government to urgently rehabilitate the road, noting that the area contributes significant revenue to the national economy through gorilla trekking tourism.

The demonstrators marched through Buhoma Town Council near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park carrying placards expressing their dissatisfaction with the condition of the road network. They argued that the deteriorating roads have negatively affected the local economy, as many tourists are discouraged from visiting the area.

Buhoma Town Council Mayor Basheija Moses emphasized that Bwindi generates substantial tourism revenue for the government through gorilla tracking permits. He noted that although President Yoweri Museveni has on several occasions pledged to improve the road, implementation has remained slow.

The Kanungu District LC V Chairperson, Byamukama Francis, also urged the government to prioritize upgrading and paving the road, saying its poor condition continues to undermine tourism and economic development in the area.
