Prime Minister Nabbanja Addresses UN General Assembly, Commits Government On SDGS Targets Achievement

The prime minister of Uganda Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah has assured the United Nations general assembly taking place in New York that the Government of Uganda is committed to utilizing science, technology, and innovation as a solution to achieving sustainable development goals.

Nabbanja made the commitment while addressing the United Nations General Assembly during the Heads of State and Government for the 2023 High-level political forum on sustainable development under the auspices of the General Assembly (SDG Summit) today 18 in New York.

Nabbanja while presenting a statement at the summit highlighted the achievements the government of Uganda has made towards the realization of the SDGs.

She says that the government of Uganda has established a National Science Technology and Innovation System, centered on priority industrial value chains, aligned to SDGs, with a focus on growing the contribution of knowledge-based goods and services to the national economy by increasing domestic productivity, import substitution and export of value-added products.

The premier briefed the UN general assembly that Uganda is Enhancing the use of data to improve the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of public services and governance in Uganda.

Nabbanja says that Uganda has recently launched the Digital Transformation Roadmap (DTR) and reiterated Uganda’s commitment to leaving no one behind in achieving the SDGs.

The secretary general of the United Nations Antonio Guteres says that many countries are in reverse in achieving the SDGs and calls on action to address the challenges.

The summit marks the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and provides a crucial opportunity to accelerate Uganda’s efforts.

The SDG summit is being attended by Vice President H.E Jesca Alupo, ministers who include Justine Kasule Lumumba, in charge of general duties in the office of the Prime Minister, foreign affairs minister Gen. Jeje Odong, the health minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the minister for water and environment Sam Cheptoris and Okello Oryem, state minister for foreign affairs.

The prime minister is expected to hold several side meetings but also make another presentation at the SDG summit.
