Opposition Leaders Criticize Government’s Economic Policies
The opposition has criticized the mismanagement of the funds allocated in the national budget and the increasing cases of corruption, which they say have contributed to neglect of essential public services in Uganda and unaccountability, among other issues.
This was while the Leader of Opposition presented the alternative budget priority areas for FY25/26 at parliament today.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has today presented the alternative FY25/26 budget priorities in a meeting that was attended by several dignitaries, including the president of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Jimmy Akena; the National Union Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi; and others.
A section of opposition leaders criticized government economic policies, accusing the government of fraudulent spending on among other projects, the Lubowa International Specialized Hospital, whose funding now stands at shs.774.4bn without a defined completion date; hence, a neglect of essential services.
The leader of the opposition fronted the need for national budgets that service the people’s needs to ensure value for taxpayers’ money, stating the alternative budget strategies the government should take into consideration to ensure proper budget servicing.
With parliament having over 500 legislators, Ssenyonyi also expressed the need to rid public offices of duplication, also calling for the establishment of a salary review commission.
The opposition implored Ugandans to decry the vices like corruption that they say continues to rob the country of development.
With the opposition’s Alternative FY25/26 Budget theme being “Combating corruption: the sure way to effective service delivery,” they seek to focus on eliminating corruption and ensuring effective service delivery whether or not the government heeds their call.
